TIPS ON IDENTIFYING SALON TROUBLEMAKERS DURING THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

The salon industry faces challenges when recruiting new staff due to the current shortage of skilled and experience candidates.  Additionally, salon owners face concerns over an uncertain economy and a somewhat difficult business environment. 

What may seem like a perfect candidate or hire at the time, may turn out to be your worst nightmare.  To avoid potential mistakes, we suggest following a list of skill-set interview techniques that will help you spot troublemakers well ahead of the hire. 

1.     You can save valuable time by conducting pre-interviews, or pre-screening your applicants.  Conduct a pre-interview with a short phone call before holding a personal interview.  At the least, a phone call will help you to determine if the candidate possesses the communication and grammar skills necessary for your salon. 

2.    Commitment and integrity are traits that you must identify in your candidates.  They must meet the interview schedule on time and display the integrity expected of your employees.  Much of this can be determined during the first face to face interview. 

3.    We have all heard that the first impression is the last impression.  If a potential hire does not impress you during the first interview, how can you expect them to impress your clients.  Observe their body movements, voice tone, language, dress and cleanliness.  Of particular importance, did they offer to shake hands and did they maintain eye contact.  Voice, volume and choice of words are of particular importance.  A weak, or unconfident voice, or a poor choice of words can quickly turn a client off and cost you money. 

4.    There may be applicants who are somewhat unclear about what the job entails.  Explaining the job duties and responsibilities are important, but other questions must also be answered.  Ask questions like what were your duties in your previous job, what do you know about the salon industry, and what challenges do you see facing the industry can oftentimes reveal volumes about the applicant.  You will also be better able to determine their level of motivation and interest. 

5.    Lastly, it is important to review an applicant’s job history.  Have they changed jobs frequently, or does it appear that they quickly lose interest in what they are doing.  Is there a valid reason why they are changing jobs such as salary issues, workload, or company policies.  Make certain they understand your company’s salary arrangement, policies, and workload before making a decision to hire them. 

 

Hopefully, with the help of these few tips, you will be able to separate the superstars from the troublemakers.  Once you have made your decision, make certain that you tell them that you believe and trust in them and how their role and job will be an important part in the future success of your salon.  An enthusiastic and motivational closing remark will go a long way in ensuring that your new hire will become successful.
