A smart phone is a powerful tool. There are many ways it can be an important element of business building. It can also tank your career and your job. Here are my top five tips for proper cell phone use at a haircutting job.
Keep it on silent – We know you have a cell phone. We might even expect you to use it in the execution of your job. No one wants to hear it. Turn it to vibrate before you walk into work.
Keep it in the back room – Unless you actually use your phone to cut hair, and likely you do not, keep your phone in the back room. There is no reason to have it on your station. It is a distraction to you and from the task of serving clients.
Keep it business – Use this business tool for business while doing business. Send Reminder texts. Send thank you emails. Playing games and listening to music has nothing to do with advancing your career. Save those phone activities for after work hours at home.
Ask about the policies – Most employers have cell phone policies. At the very least they have strong opinions about what phone use is permissible in their workplace. Ask what the rules are long before you run afoul of them. “no one told me” is not an excuse for anyone over 8 years old.
When in doubt, Don’t – This is my favorite rule for many things. It certainly applies for phone use at work.
