Purpose / Profile

In addition to performing guest services duties as a licensed, professional stylist, the salon manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the job performance of a team of stylists and ensuing proper salon operations. With the support of other management team members, the salon manager is primarily responsible for all aspects of salon operations, salon team performance, and salon team development. The salon manager will accomplish this by consistently demonstrating company principles for guest service and technical excellence, using company-selected techniques effectively, creatively and with efficiency.

When acting as a stylist, the salon manager provides selected hair care services, such as shampooing, cutting, coloring, perming, relaxing, and styling hair, and removing hair using tweezers and hot wax.

The salon manager acts as a company champion in local community engagement, participating in community events and meetings, and helping to oversee company-sponsored events that enhance the communities in which we operate, and enhance the reputation and desirability of the company's services and products.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Lead and develop a team of creative, enthusiastic stylists to help each to achieve their goals.
  • Ensure all salon team members can confidently, accurately and repeatedly perform all job-related expectations.
  • Create an environment that encourages and rewards outstanding guest service, satisfaction and retention. Lead by example: Demonstrating guest service and technical excellence at all times.
  • Create and maintain a salon environment that encourages all salon employees to work together as a team. Recognize and reward teaming behavior, and intercede as appropriate when interpersonal conflicts occur.
  • Ensure the salon meets guest service, guest count, guest retention, and financial goals.
  • Perform hair services on guests greater than 75% of scheduled time and meet personal performance goals.
  • Provide oversight of the salon team, including recruiting, selection and hiring, onboarding, training, skills development, product knowledge, performance management, safety, recognition, compliance with company policies, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure proper salon operations at all times, including the scheduling and job performance of all salon employees.
  • Help manage salon expenses.
  • Support the professional and personal development of salon employees consistent with company goals and guidelines.
  • Place and check in supply orders timely and within budget; while ensuring not to run out of needed supplies to services guests.
  • Analyze guests' hair and other physical features to determine and recommend services, products and hairstyles.
  • Shampoo, rinse, condition and dry hair and scalp or hairpieces with water, liquid soap, or other solutions.
  • Cut, trim and shape hair or hairpieces, based on customers' instructions, hair type and facial features, using clippers, scissors, trimmers and razors.
  • Bleach, color, or tint hair, using company-supplied materials.
  • Apply water, setting, straightening or waving solutions to hair and use curlers, rollers, hot combs and curling irons to press and curl hair.
  • Comb, brush, and spray hair or wigs to set hairstyles. Create updos or elegant hairstyles for formal events such as prom, weddings, or other occasions.
  • Educate the customer and recommend products to help the customer maintain his/her hairstyle between store visits.
  • Demonstrate and sell hair care products.
  • Clean and maintain the cleanliness of all salon areas. Clean and sanitize tools such as shears, trimmers, clippers, combs and brushes.
  • Schedule guest appointments.
  • Operate computer-based tools including a POS system to sell products and services to guests and receive cash and credit card payments.
  • Update and maintain customer information records, such as the services provided.
  • Receive product and salon equipment shipments. Organize products and salon equipment on shelves and in storage areas.
  • Count product inventory and record information in computer systems.
  • Demonstrate products and services to guests and to other company employees.
  • Attend required training and employee meeting sessions.
  • Maintain effective financial controls, including:
  •  Correctly charging guests for services provided and products purchased, including proper discounting according to company guidelines
  •  Effective control of salon operating costs relating to back-bar and retail inventories, and,

  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Frequent lifting up to 10 lbs. to pick up bottles of product needed to perform hair services and stock retail shelves. Occasional lifting 10-25 lbs. to assist unloading monthly shipment of products.
  • Continuous standing throughout the day to perform hair services and other job related functions.
  • Continuous walking – greeting the guest at the front of the salon and walking them back to the styling chair, to and from the shampoo area, to get supplies needed for the service and walking the guest back to the front of the salon.
  • Continuous repetitive movement with fingers, hands, wrists and arms using scissors to cut hair, rolling hair in rods to perform perm services, vigorous movement to massage/shampoo client's hair, twisting wrists to blow dry and styling hair with various tools.
  • Continuous grasping of client's hair, blow dryer, curling iron, combs, and hair coloring brushes in order to perform services.
  • Continuous reaching, alternating between shoulder level and above shoulder level height to perform services, stock shelves, retrieve product/supplies from cupboards and shelves.
  • Frequent twisting and bending to shampoo client's hair and twisting to reach for tools while client is seated in styling chair and sweep hair off the floor after service.
  • Occasional pushing and pulling to move styling chair.
  • Continuous exposure to various chemicals and fragrances used in performing services and styling hair, including but not limited to permanent solutions, straightening solutions, shampoos, conditioners, hair spray and client perfume.
  • Occasional climbing of ladder/stepstool to stock shelves, retrieve products, change bi-monthly collateral, and maintain salon.
  • Basic reading, writing and math skills necessary to read and complete company forms and other documents, read product instructions and prepare daily closeout documents.
  • Occasional travel to mandatory meetings and training sessions, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Attach wigs or hairpieces to model heads and dress wigs and hairpieces according to instructions, samples, sketches or photographs.

Salon Manager Qualifications

  • Current State of Wisconsin Cosmetology or Barbering license
