Wow! 2020 has been a challenge for us as stylists and salon owners, perhaps as no other year before. And the challenges just seem to keep coming. We must trudge through…one foot in front of the other, day by day.
How do we do this? Well, similar to what we must do to strengthen and exercise our bodies (proper diet and exercise), we must also pay equal attention to nurturing our mental health. It's something that must be properly attended to each and every day.
We all make a living by making others feel better, but in order to do this effectively, we must first take care of ourselves. Self-care, especially in 2020, is critical!
Mindfulness is a term that abounds us, and there's good reason for it. Mindfulness refers to focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while accepting and recognizing our personal thoughts and feelings.
In a way, I believe this is the key to a good life. Staying present, while honoring your feelings. It's tough sometimes, however. We can easily get distracted and off-center, especially with the unprecedented stressors we've had this year. Frankly, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." But this doesn't involve bulldozing through each day...in fact, quite the opposite is true.
We are looking to achieve a calm acceptance of what's happening around us.
And acceptance doesn't mean inaction. We must take healthful actions each day. Life is a series of choices, and it's clearly up to us to decide what we focus our energy on, and what actions we take.
What's a good way to be mindful? Meditation is a terrific tool. It doesn't have to involve an expensive course study, but rather, just learning a simple breathing technique or two. Get in touch with your breath, learn how to do some deep breathing, and you'll be well on your way.
The idea is to sit still and breathe, even if only for a few minutes; acknowledge the feelings and thoughts that arise, and then, simply go back to your breathing.
It's kind of a metaphor for life; whatever you experience during the day, just breathe. Breathing allows us to learn to stay present in the moment. It's easy to Google how to meditate or to take a yoga class. Or even feel free to reach out to me, as I teach meditation for professionals.
Meditation is one way to stay mentally strong during a pandemic. However, there are many other strategies as well. Yoga, Tai Chi, other forms of exercise may help you to achieve a sense of calm and acceptance as well. Maybe it's a meditative walk in the woods that works best for you. Explore and find what fits best for you. Whatever will keep you calm in our current state of affairs is a good choice.
We will carry on, and we will be able to service our clients and make them feel good. Just remember that the best way to take care of someone else is to first take care of you.
