A well-done resume is an important part of the job search. With a professional, concise, and comprehensive portfolio, it is easier to stand out from other candidates, increasing the chances of landing the job of your dreams.
The beauty industry is one that is highly competitive, and you must ensure that you put your best foot forward in the very first steps you take in your job hunt. This is exactly why having an outstanding resume is crucial.
Here are a few tips to help you out:
Choose a resume format that represents you.
Decide on the format which would work best for your style, history, and the position you are targeting. Depending on your experience, opt for a format that showcases your strengths. There are different types available, including functional, chronological, combination, and targeted.
Even though chronological order is commonly used, it may not work well if you have less work experience. As a new grad, your best option may be a combination format, allowing you to highlight the experience you do have as well as the skills and qualities that make you a worthy professional.
Determine if you need an objective statement.
If you have experience working in the beauty industry (beyond education & licensure), then you don’t necessarily need an objective statement in your resume. With a bit of tenure & hands-on exposure, it may be better to include a summary statement instead to describe yourself.
As a recent graduate or someone who's just changed fields, an objective statement that incorporates both your experience and your goals is the way to go. If you choose this route, be certain to describe your ambitions clearly & what you wish to achieve by landing the role. For example, you can mention how you plan to contribute to the growth of the company, etc.
Optimize your resume for an ATS.
Today, an ATS, or Applicant Tracking System, is widely used for filtering out resumes of applicants who do not fulfill certain requirements for a job. This means that before any human ever sees your resume, it first goes through the ATS.
To ensure that you pass the ATS, make sure your resume is organized and formatted properly and that you use the correct keywords related to that job. This means that you should incorporate some of the same language used in the job description.
Update your resume regularly.
As you move forward in your cosmetology career, it’s necessary to refresh your resume. The resume you had four (or even one) years ago won’t be relevant today. It’s important that you include the latest information regarding your professional life, such as continuing education.
When it comes to your profile, make sure that you do not utilize a cookie-cutter approach. Avoid using the same resume for every job application by tweaking/customizing your resume, retaining and deleting information, changing the organization name, etc. depending on the job and company you are applying for.
With these useful and practical resume tips, you can be confident that your resume will stand out from the rest!
