Should we be dreading or celebrating a “New Normal?”

As stylists, we have become quickly accustomed to the fact that we need to remain flexible with the uncertainties of the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ve been shut down, reopened and shut down again. Now we are open again, but on a limited scale. With all of this uncertainty, how do we adequately prepare for the “new normal” that nobody can definitively define?

Well, in addition to having a cabinet well stocked with hand sanitizer, sanitizer wipes, disinfectant and sprays, we really need to focus on maintaining our own mental and physical health. We are only going to show up in a big way for our clients if we are showing up in a big way for ourselves. So, how do we do this? 

In addition to maintaining our client relationships with honesty and integrity, we need to take daily steps to becoming healthier both mentally and physically. Here are a few recommendations on how to do this…

  • Practice gratitude. Take time out of each day (even if only 5 minutes before bed) to think or write down three things that you are grateful for in your life, or that happened to you that day. You can be grateful for the conversation you had that day with a relative. You can be grateful for the relaxing hot shower you took that morning. You don’t have to look far to realize how fortunate you are. You are what you think…so focus on the positive!

  • Use your additional “at-home” time wisely and get organized! When you organize it provides you with a greater sense of control. There are a lot of things that we cannot control these days, so it’s a good idea to control the things we can.

  • Plan what you can in order to have something to look forward to. This could be a family trip during the holidays, or something as simple as a coffee date this weekend with a friend. Having something positive in the near future will help motivate you to keep moving forward.

  • Get healthy! Use this time to take better care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Drink more water. Set aside time to exercise each day (if only for 15-30 minutes). Reach out to an old friend and laugh a little. Smiling and laughing releases endorphins and creates positivity. 

If you focus your energy on what you can control, in an effort to create a healthier and more positive you, your energy will be infectious and your ability to serve your clients in the best way possible will come naturally. Worrying about the future causes stress and anxiety. Try to focus on the positive and take one day at a time. Perhaps the new normal on the horizon will be a blessing in disguise. A normal with more sensitivity and mindfulness of others can only be a good thing.

Stay positive and stay calm. We will get through this, and perhaps be even stronger on the other side.
