Stress Tolerance is Key to your Career!

Stress tolerance is defined as the ability to be relaxed and composed when faced with

difficulties. Stress tolerance is not keeping yourself from being anxious or frazzled, but rather it is the management of those emotions when they arise. It is only human to be worried about things.

 

One cannot prevent themselves from ever being stressed. A person may be able to handle every single task on their plate, but what happens when someone unexpectedly drops their plate on you? There are so many things that cause stress that we have absolutely no control over. Say a colleague is out for maternity leave and it’s your job to pick up their clients while she’s gone. Yes, this may be a great deal of added stress for you. Maybe you didn’t ask for it or even see it coming. That doesn’t change the fact that it is now your responsibility. But with a good understanding of stress tolerance, this seemingly unbearable situation can be used for your own good.

 

 

Healthy stress tolerance is all about taking your worries over lack of control or ability to handle the situation and turning them into positivity. This involves adopting practices to cope with your stress. Below are a few of these practices and examples of how to integrate them in your life—

 

1. Manage Your Time Wisely: Whatever may be stressing you out can be alleviated greatly with good time management. Making a schedule ahead of time can often make your seemingly endless list of responsibilities seem so much more manageable. It may involve sacrifices. Getting all your appointments in for the day may mean that you have to wake up an hour earlier or stay in the salon an hour later. It may not be the most fun thing ever, but you will feel much less stressed knowing that you have everything planned out ahead of time.

           

a. One way to implement time management for better stress tolerance is to make schedules and lists. These allow you to write everything down and see it

on paper, rather than all these events and appointments and times running around in your head. Make your list a couple of days ahead of time and amend it

when things change. It’s easier to feel in control of change when you are mentally prepared for it.

 

2. Take a Few Minutes for Yourself: Life can be very stressful. It can seemingly be full of the nitty-gritty, mundane things. As I mentioned earlier, it’s great to make a schedule. But somewhere in that schedule maybe allot a few minutes for yourself. Sometimes it can be great for your stress levels to take a breather and tell yourself that despite how chaotic it feels at that moment, things will get better.

 

a. One way to implement this into your lifestyle is to not schedule appointments back to back. Maybe leave a five-minute break in between for you to get

yourself together. Or at least one or two five-minute breaks per day. Talking to people in your profession is a privilege but sometimes it can feel claustrophobic.

You may not get quite as many appointments in but your stress levels will thank you for the little times that you were willing to donate towards your well-being.

 

3. Realize that Saying No is Okay Sometimes: Feeling like we’re pleasing others is great.

 

That is one of the core values in the beauty industry and is something we should always strive for. But sometimes saying yes to every request comes at our own expense. For stress tolerance, it is okay to say no sometimes. Say a client requested a style that is beyond your expertise. Rather than stressing over something you have no idea how to do and potentially wasting your client’s money, refer her to someone else in your salon who can. Or maybe you were asked to fit in a walk-in between two individuals who made appointments. If you simply do not have the time, saying no is absolutely okay. It feels great to be accommodating and flexible, but it’s never healthy to bend so much that you break.

 

 

As I said, stress tolerance is not a guarantee that you will never feel overpowered. It is not a way of keeping anxiousness from entering your brain. But it is a way of managing these feelings when they arise. Sometimes everything will feel like it’s falling down. Stress tolerance doesn’t prevent things from hitting the ground but it does help in putting things back together.
